This musical group, headed by identical twins, Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Kiersten Quin has gained an intense fan base and equal popularity in the indie/indie-rock genres. Now playing on television soundtracks, and touring, these young musicians have grown accustomed to working with such artists as: The Pretenders, Neil Young, Cake and The Killers.
Both women were born in Calgary and started their musical careers at the ripe age of fifteen. They utilized their school’s recording studio in 1997 to drop the tracks on their first demo, which then led to an album. In 1999 the twins released this first album, entitled, Under Feet Like Ours. At the time of this album release, the band was known as Sara and Tegan, but was later re-released as Tegan and Sara as it was easier to pronounce. The album was then re-released again in 2001 with the bonus track “Frozen”. The album was made available again in 2006 via Tegan and Sara’s online store at Maple Music.
Later, the sisters were signed by Neil Young’s manager to Young’s Vapor Records label. The album “This Business of Art” was released in 2000.
In 2002, the sisters released their third album If It Was You. Singles from the album include “Time Running”, “Living Room,” “I Hear Noises”, and “Monday Monday Monday”.
Staying with their success, a fourth album came out in 2004, So Jealous. The album contributed highly to the girl’s success. The single “Walking With A Ghost” was covered by “The White Stripes” who released it on their album “Walking with a Ghost.”
While making albums, Tegan and Sara toured, performing in festivals nationwide. In 1999 the group took part in Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and in 2005 the group was then invited to play at Lollapalooza. Cyndi Lauper recruited the duo in 2008 for her True Colors Tour, and Holly Miranda has already taken interest in including them in an upcoming show.
In 2007, they released The Con. Guest performers on the album included Jason McGerr of Death Cab For Cutie, Matt Sharp of The Rentals and formerly of Weezer, Hunter Burgan of AFI, and Kaki King.
On October 27, 2009, Tegan and Sara released their sixth album Sainthood, as well as a three-volume book set titled ON, IN, AT. The book is a three-book set that chronicles different time periods over a year in the girl’s lives with writing and photographs: the 2008 US national tour, a joint writing session in New Orleans for the new album in the fall of 2008 and the 2009 Australian headlining tour.
In 2009, the band released their album Sainthood. The lyrics from Leonard Cohen’s 1976 song, “Came So Far For Beauty,” became the inspiration behind the album. The album revolves around relationships but as reviewers have stated, they tend to go deeper than typical relationship drama and that the struggle, grief and bitterness bleed and breathe throughout the album.
While recording Sainthood, Tegan and Sara spent some time writing songs together in New Orleans. The song “Paperback Head” appeared on the album, making it the first song on any Tegan and Sara album that they wrote together. Spin Magazine gave Sainthood four out of five stars and wrote, “Tegan and Sara’s music may no longer be the stuff of teens, but its strength remains in how much it feels like two people talking.
Tegan and Sarah have expanded their musical talent to perform with television shows and movies in: North America, Canada and Europe. Tegan and Sara were proud to perform on the movie soundtracks of: Monster-In-Law and Sweet November. The two also placed musical backdrops to such popular television series’ as: Grey’s Anatomy, The Hills, The L Word, Melrose Place, 90210, One Tree Hill and Veronica Mars.
