Court Yard Hounds take a sidestep from Dixie Chicks

Martie Maguire and Emily Robison of the Dixie Chicks have taken a parallel, but new road. Vocal harmonists known for their musical talent with the Dixie Chicks, have formed their very own musical duo: “Court Yard Hounds”. The group, “Court Yard Hounds”,was first formed in 2008 after Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, stated she was not prepared to start up a 2009 album. Finding it necessary to continue in music, the sisters (Martie and Emily) decided to record under a different name, signing with Columbia Records.

Sisters, Emily Robison (formally Emily Erwin) and Martie Maguire (formally Martie Erwin) first formed the Dixie Chicks in 1989. Lead vocalist Lynn Macy was replaced by, the feisty, Natalie Maines in 1995. The Dixie Chicks additionally managed to form their own record label, Open Wide Records, in direct association with Columbia Records. Robison and Maguire announced their new group in January 2010, stating that the Dixie Chicks are not a closed chapter, but rather a project put on pause. Robison claimed, “One reason I felt like we needed to not let the cat out of the bag too soon, is that every time I would tell someone about the project, they’d say, ‘Well who are you going to get as the leader singer?’ It was hard to explain what we were trying to do”.

The Dixie chicks originally formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas and was labeled a bluegrass and country music band. The band received great success with hit songs “Wide Open Spaces”, “Cowboys Take Me Away”, and “Long Time Gone”.

The group became controversial during the Bush era and the invasion of Iraq. The group commented that they were embarrassed for Texas and that Bush was from their state.

Despite the controversy, the group went on and produced more albums and became involved with other projects. In 2006, their album “Taking The Long Way” was the ninth best-selling album in the United States. During the 49th Grammy Awards Show, the group won all five categories for which they were nominated including the top awards of Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “Not Ready To Make Nice” and Album of the Year for “Taking the Long Way”. After the Grammys, “Taking The Long Way” hit #8 on Billboard 200 on the #1 country album charts.

The group was also nominated for the 2007 Country Music Association’s award for Top Vocal Group and in May 2010 began touring with the Eagles.

Now, as the group has reformed as the “Court Yard Hounds”, they were joined on their first self-titled album, by Jakob Dylan. Although they added Dylan to the song, “See You in the Spring”, the album is said to be ‘very personal’ for the sisters: an autobiography of sorts. Natalie, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks has also proven to be quite supportive of the new album, hoping that Dixie Chick fans will hold to the new idea of the “Court Yard Hounds.”

The “Court Yard Hounds” will go on tour starting June 18, 2010 until July 10, 2010.
