Rihanna comes to the Defense of Man Down’s Gory Visuals

Rihanna Stars Tattoo Rihanna comes to the Defense of Man Down’s Gory VisualsThe Rihanna-related events of the week included the release of her new ‘Man Down’ video, which was quickly followed by the disapproval of its violent content by several entertainment watchdog groups such as the Parents TV Council and Industry Ears. And now the expected rebuttal from the Barbadian has arrived, with the singer taking to her twitter account to defend her latest video from critics.

In a detailed tweet, Rihanna wrote, “I’m a 23 year old rock star with NO KIDS! What’s up with everybody wantin’ me to be a parent? I’m just a girl, I can only be your/our voice!. Cuz we all know how difficult/embarrassing it is to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone especially our parents! And this is why! … Cuz we turn the other cheek! U can’t hide your kids from society, or they’ll never learn how to adapt! This is the REAL WORLD! … The music industry isn’t exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! It’s your job to make sure they don’t turn out like US.”

The PTC and others alike are against the opening scene of the video, in which Rihanna is shown to shoot down a man, who had raped her in the clip, which is shown a little later. The on-screen murder takes place in the middle of crowded public place and the singer appears to justify the act with the lyrical content throughout the video.

As a result of the PTC and company’s intense condemnation of Man Down, Rihanna’s fans started threatening the members of these organizations, but the singer jumped in between the two parties to prevent it from getting ugly. She tweeted, “We love it, they don’t … that is all, and the world keeps turning.”

The council had demanded BET to remove Man Down video and RiRi in return came to her video’s defense and told BET show to do the same. While she admitted that stirring up new controversy wasn’t her motive, she isn’t surprised with the ensuing circus.

She explained, “Rape is, unfortunately, happening all over the world and in our own homes, and we continue to cover it up and pretend it doesn’t happen. Boys and girls feel compelled to be embarrassed about it and hide it from everyone, including their teachers, their parents and their friends. That only continues to empower the abusers.”

The video was first shown on BET program “106 & Park” and soon after its premier, the regulators wanted to bring it down. But BET released a statement, in which it neither committed to take ‘Man Down’ down, nor did it throw in its support behind Rihanna. The released statement read, “BET Networks has a comprehensive set of standards and guidelines that are applied to all of our content. The Rihanna ‘Man Down’ video complied with these guidelines and was approved for air. At the same time, it is clear that the ‘Man Down’ video has sparked a passionate dialogue and we will continue this conversation with our audience tonight on ’106 & Park.’ ”
