John Lennon’s Legacy Lives On

GOASTTNo doubt you feel a twinge of envy after hearing the story of the couple Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl, considering that Sean is the only child of the late John Lennon and Yoko Ono, while Charlotte is a magazine runway model. The two dwell in simplicity, their main activities together being sketching, talking about films and going to cafés. Their story resembles a clip from Godard movie; both unreal and ideal.

When they wrote the song “The World Was Made for Men”, the couple said that they were just kidding around one day. The song was created based entirely on a lush harmonious collaboration of voices, and was first heard on last year’s album “The Acoustic Sessions”. Charlotte said that they both wrote the song and wondered if they would have a band eventually. This dream later became a reality for the two when they launched GOASTT.

Looking at how Charlotte entered into the music industry, we see that she had just been a typical musician with nothing more but her old acoustic guitar, given to her by her father. Music initially just served as her diversion when the fashion industry was on its ebb.

On the other hand, Sean was not a newcomer to the music industry. At the tender age of 20, he was  the back up for his mother’s album “Rising”. Then he joined Cibo Matto, a New York pop group with an inclination toward art. Nevertheless, when he decided to go solo, his music did not earn him attention from fans. This was seen on his first album “Into the Sun” which was released in 1998. The album was a compilation of psychedelic pop songs which was launched through the Beastie Boy’s Grand Royal Records. In 2006, he made his second solo album, “Friendly Fire”, but again did not gain much attention.

Everything changed with the launch of GOASTT, which seemed to give Lennon the energy to graduate from the small time circuit. Having Charlotte beside him has definitely changed  things for Sean Lennon.

Eminem and Rihanna top 40 musicThe Top Forty or Top 40 is the music industry’s way of determining the most well-known songs whether across all genres.  The top 40 list refers to the top selling or the most listened to songs or music from last week; this method of tracking the most popular music started in the 1960s and has continued up to today.

This list of the most popular songs can either be determined through a survey done by a publication or radio station.  Of the songs commonly featured in the top 40, the common characteristic is that most of the top songs have just been released or are relatively new.

The top listings are not limited to the number 40.  The number of songs on the listing may differ depending on the organization doing the tracking.  It can either be “Top 20”, “Top 50” or even “Top 100.”  The number does not really matter; all the list does is to determine the most popular songs during the current week.

The Top 40 is more than a list…it’s the basis for the playlists on stations everywhere. Want to hear some great Top 40 hits? Hit up 977music.com’s Hitz or Mix or Jamz Stations and enjoy some great streaming Internet Radio right now!

Top 40 Radio Explained

In the radio industry, a song’s popularity is measured by the demand for the song based on the volume of requests from listeners and sales. The Top 40 is one of the music metrics that tracks the most popular songs within a current week, month or year. Top 40 playback became a dominant radio format during the 1960’s and was persisted until the 1980’s.

You may be wondering how Top 40 works: what is the process, how does a song make it to the Top 40? I will try to explain it further. Each week, the 100 most popular songs are put into a chart by Billboard. The Billboard chart is based on a national sample of top radio airplay and music sales. The Top 40 songs are then extracted from Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Airplay is the first process in determining the songs to be included in the Top 40. Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), run by Neilsen, keeps track of the airplay. BDS uses a certain technology called digital pattern-recognition to capture songs that are being played on radio stations and music channels all over the US and Canada.  This recognition process is run 24/7 and captures over 100 million songs annually; the data gathered is then used by Billboard in compiling weekly charts.

The second process used in determining the Top 40 songs is monitoring the sales of albums in music stores. To track sales, Billboard then uses SoundScan, another technology developed by Neilsen that keeps track of record sales all over the US and Canada. When we purchase an album, sales data from the barcode is passed to SoundScan; the stored data is compiled and published weekly.

The methodology of Billboard in weighting the compiled data has changed over time. In the past, they were using 90% airplay and 10% sales to determine the top songs. Now, they use 80% airplay and 20% sales because of shifting trends in how many people listen to radio versus how many people actually purchase singles.

Most recording artists’ goal is to sell albums, and for albums to sell, their songs must be popular on the radio.  Once a song hits the Top 40 list, a massive rise in album sales is generally guaranteed. Top 40 has been a measuring stick for album sales and the trend will likely continue. Not making the Top 40 does not say that your success rate as an artist will be low; not all musicians are after big sales after all. Some are contented with the money they are making and the little spotlight time they get.

Choosing Workout Music

Workout Music

It is natural that you have some favourite songs that you listen to when you work out or exercise. Music can be good for relaxation, but by choosing songs with the proper tempo and beat characteristics, it also makes your heart beat faster and makes your body more willing to undergo the physical stress of exercise. Exercise is pretty much like dancing; who would like to groove without music? The same principle applies when you work out.

If you are a music lover, music is connected to every aspect in your life. You might have a favourite song for whatever activity you’re doing: waking up, cooking song, dropping off to sleep, driving and so on and so forth. If you love exercising and working out, then it just follows that you have a song or two for that as well.

3 “Top 40” Songs for Exercising

  • Keri Hilson & Lil Wayne – Turnin Me On
  • Hey Monday – Homecoming
  • Benny Benassi & Channing – Come Fly Away

These are all relatively new songs with a common characteristic: their upbeat tunes (which is the reason why a lot of people are choosing these songs as their favorites for working out). These songs help them to keep on moving and give them the push and motivation that they needed. But aside from these things, these songs offer something more which will be beneficial for their health.

The biggest advantage of mixing music with your workout is that up-tempo music helps to stimulate cardiovascular activity; if the music is good, it will not only stimulate you to do the workout but it will also stimulate your rate. Your blood circulation will be better and your workout will be more effective, resulting in enhanced weight loss.

For best results, note that the speed of the music should be from 118 to 122 bpm, or Beats Per Minute. Your workout playlist should also be designed to accommodate a full workout, starting slowly and allowing your body to adjust and adapt to the activity before increasing in intensity. After a warm-up period, the beat will increase and encourage quicker movements. After the workout is complete, the music should slow down again for a cool-down period to allow the body to relax.

Music has a lot of uses in our lives. We can listen to music if we want to relax. If a person wants to be energized and to be encouraged to keep on moving, music can be used as a cardiovascular stimulant. It helps when the gym that you are a member of always has good music playing in the background…if not, fire up your iPod Touch or iPhone and use 977music’s app to play your workout music.  Your mood will immediately be set. Adding music to an otherwise tiresome activity of working out and exercising will make a more worthwhile experience…it might even become fun.
