Olympic Performance

The opening ceremonies for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada took place on Friday evening. The performances by the dancers, musicians, athletes, and laser light shows were stunning. The opening ceremony paid tribute to not only the athletes, but to Canada and its rich aboriginal tradition. We learned about Canadian culture and were mesmerized by the performances. Famous Canadian singers performed during the show and included the talents of Sarah McLachlan, Nikki Yanofsky, Bryan Adams, and Nelly Furtado.

Nikki Yanofsky blew everyone by her young age and amazing voice. She is only sixteen years old and belted out the Canadian national anthem, O Canada. She is a Canadian pop singer from Montreal who also incorporates jazz sounds into her music. She is working on releasing her first studio album.

Another great performance that was filled with energy and talent was by Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams who sang Bang the Drum. Bryan Adams has been releasing albums that have been popular in both the United States and Canada since 1980. He is a Canadian rock singer who also writes songs and plays musical instruments such as the piano, guitar, bass guitar, harmonica, and the keyboards. He and Nelly Furtado sounded great during their performance of Bang the Drum which was an Olympic tribute song.

Nelly Furtado is also a Canadian singer who grew up in Victoria, Canada. Her music has topped the American music charts and Internet Radio stations as well as traditional American radio programs. She has worldwide fame and sings folk, pop, R&B, and Latin rock music. She also plays an array of instruments such as the ukulele, guitar, trombone, and keyboards. She has been nominated for American, Latin, and European awards.

Sarah McLachlan has such a beautiful voice to accompany her outstanding piano playing. She performed a song while the Alberta Ballet dance company interpretive danced during her song. She sang one of her own songs, Ordinary Miracle, while she played the piano. Sarah is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and has also been a success in the United States. She sings emotional ballad pop songs and plays the harp, piano, and guitar.

In addition to great music being performed, the opening ceremony had dancing, cultural storytelling, and hundreds of fiddlers playing music. The ceremony included tap dancing, interpretive ballet dancing, and aboriginal dancing. The LED light show was mesmerizing and the poem read by Shane Koyczan was captivating. There were Olympic performances that will be remembered forever.

The Who Performs at Super Bowl

The National Football League (NFL) hosts the championship game between the two best football teams in the nation at a game called the super Bowl. Fans start rivalries, teams practice for weeks perfecting their plays, companies make the best commercials they can, and one outstanding band rehearses to perform during half time. The Super Bowl half time show gets almost as much hype as the game itself. Before the game gained a lot of viewership and popularity, the halftime show consisted of marching bands like you would see at high school or college games. Once they saw the potential for exposure, they introduced famous bands or singers to perform.

This year, The Who, was the headline performer at the Super Bowl and performed in the half time show. Queen Latifah sang our national anthem, and Carrie Underwood performed the Star Spangled Banner. The Who performed as a solo act and didn’t use other bands, musicians, or dancers during the show. They had an incredible stage set up in the center of the field with a lot of lights that made a lightshow during their songs. They performed four of their most popular songs which were Who Are You, Pinball Wizard, Won’t Get Fooled Again, and Baba O’Riley. As their performance was broadcasted on television, you could hear the crowd in the stadium singing along and really enjoying the show.

The Who consists of current members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Pete played awesome guitar during the show. Former members Keith Moon, John Entwistle, and Kenney Jones no longer tour with the band. They have touring members that played with Pete and Roger at the half time show, and the touring members are John Bundrick, Pino Palladino, Zak Starkey, and Simon Townshend.

The band has been performing since 1965 and has released numerous hit albums. They are an English band that plays rock, art rock, pop rock, and hard rock music. They are best known for their live performances and instrument destruction while on stage. We didn’t see any of the destruction during the half time show, so perhaps they have calmed their performances down. A lot of heavy metal rock bands imitated their style of performance using instrument destruction. The Who have released 17 albums during their career and are still performing.

Their unique sound and live performances have won them both national and universal recognition. They have been inducted into the American Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame. They have also won Grammy awards and lifetime achievement awards.

Best New Artist 2010

The Grammy’s are a music award program that recognizes accomplishment in the music industry. It is a star studded event with glamour musicians, a night of awards, speeches, and performances by some of our favorite artists. You can win awards for song of the year, album of the year, record of the year, and best new artist. These awards are given out as overall ratings, and then a musician can also a win a more genre specific award such as best rock and roll album. The most coveted award by new bands and solo acts is best new artist. It establishes their place in the music industry and proves they can make it amongst legendary bands or soloists.

This year, the best new artist Grammy award was given to the Zac Brown Band. They were up against nominations MGMT, The Ting Tangs, Keri Hilson, and the Silversun Pickups. To be nominated for this award, you had to have made a public interest for the first time with your music. The band or artist doesn’t have to be newly formed. For example, they may have started their career in music years before but hadn’t gained a lot of popularity or public attention.

The Zac Brown Band gained a lot of public attention and had songs that were played on the radio, had songs requested, and made the Billboard music charts with singles from their album. In 2009, they had three number one singles make the Billboard chart which solidified their nomination to win best new artist in 2010. The singles are called: Toes, Whatever it is, and Highway 20 Ride. Only five country music singers or bands have won this award.

They are a country music band that formed in 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia. They record under the labels Live Nation, Home Grown Music, and Atlantic. The band is made up of members: Zac Brown, John Driskell Hopkins, Coy Bowels, Clay Cook, Chris Fryar, and Jimmy De Martini. Each member plays a musical instrument and sings. You will hear sounds coming from guitars, an organ, a fiddle, bass guitar, steel guitar, drums, and a mandolin.

It may have taken them nine years to gain a lot of public attention and national fame, but they have been nominated and won many awards. Their music can be heard on many different country Internet Radio and traditional radio stations. They have a unique sound that makes them stand out in the country music genre.

The Eagles Hotel California and Its Mystery

Those who grew up listening to the Eagles may recall when the song Hotel California came out. It wasn’t long that rumors began circulating about the song’s mystical meaning. Before long, religious zealots determined it was written about Satanism, or the church of Satan. The song then became tied in with many other songs considered to be evil, such as Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven, and kids were either forced to stop listening or had to listen to it in secrecy.

So what does the song Hotel California really represent or what is it about, you may ask? Besides the speculation of it being about Satanism there has been guesses at the theme representing insanity, drug addiction, temptation, and shallow relationships. Members of the band won’t break the song out line by line to explain its meaning but overall say it is about the hedonism of the United States and the destruction of the Southern California music industry. Don Henley, band member who wrote most of the song adds, “it’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.”

In an interview with ZigZag magazine before the album’s release, Henley added “This is a concept album, there’s not way to hide it, but it’s not set in the old West, the cowboy thing, you know. It’s more urban this time…it’s our bicentennial year, you know, the country is 200 years old, so we figured since we are the Eagles and the Eagle is our national symbol, that we were obliged to make some kind of little bicentennial statement using California as a microcosm of the whole United States or the whole world, if you will, and try to wake people up and say, “we’ve been okay so far, for 200 years, but we’re gonna have to change if we’re gonna continue to be around.”

Despite the explanation there are some who have tried to capitalize on the song’s success. Owner of the hotel in Mexico, Todos Santos, say his hotel was home to the Eagles who wrote Hotel California from its rooms. Rumor turned into legend. According to Snopes.com, none of the Eagles band members ever stayed in the hotel.

Others say Hotel California was the nickname of the Camarillo State psychiatric hospital near Los Angeles. But there have been no facts to verify that either. Other odd rumors about the album include: it’s a place ran by cannibals who only take guests that they serve up for dinner – this is based on the lyrics “You can check in any time you like, but you can never leave.”

Or the song is about drug addiction due to the lyrics, “Warm smell of colitis rising through the air”, which does refer to the scent of burning marijuana, and that Hotel California is a code name for cocaine use and the journey into addiction.

Then there is the belief that the Hotel California represent satanic master Aleister Crowley’s mansion near Loch Ness, where weird happenings occurred. Crowley’s nickname was “The Beast”.

Despite the rumors, the song was a success, and the album Hotel California ranked among the 20 best-selling albums in the United States. And there certainly is no mystery in the fact the album sold over 16 million copies in the U.S. alone and was #1 for eight weeks in early 1977.

Train Finding New Success in Hey Soul Sister

The band train has been riding the tracks of success again with its October 2009 release “Hey Soul Sister” from the album Save Me San Francisco. Based in San Francisco, California, the title of their album seems pretty apt. The song has already spent sixteen weeks on Billboards Hot 100, sitting at #7 on the week of January 30, 2010. Train hasn’t witnessed such success of a single since it released “Drops of Jupiter” in 2001.

The band Train was formed in 1997 with members Patrick Monahan (lead vocals) and Rob Hotchkiss, (guitar and vocals). The two later recruited Jimmy Stafford on guitar, Charlie Colin on bass and Scott Underwood as drummer. The group began touring nationally in 1997, opening concerts for groups such as Barenaked Ladies and Counting Crows. The group was quickly signed by Columbia Records label Aware Records. Their song “Free” saw significant airplay on mainstream rock radio. It was followed by the hit single “Meet Virginia” a song that became a top 20 hit.

Before releasing their second album, the band issued another single, “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me). Not realizing the success of the song, it entered the Hot 100 on March 10, 2001 and spent 53 weeks on the chart. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song as well as a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement. The song’s writer Pat Monahan stated the song was written about a dream he had regarding his mother’s death. The album became Train’s first multi-platinum.

In June 2003 the band released its third album My Private Nation. Its single “Calling All Angels” drew great attention to the album, as the song became Train’s third top 20 hit. Other hits on the album included “When I Look To The Sky”, a song used as a trailer for the 2004 movie Jersey Girl. In 2004, their non-album song “ordinary” was featured in the Spider-Man 2 movie and later on NBC’s Heroes.

After this, Train struggled. They released their fourth album For Me, It’s You in 2005. It was Train’s first album to fail commercially. With this, the band decided to take a break in November 2006. Lead singer Pat Monahan released a solo album Last of Seven on September 18, 2007. Single’s “Her Eyes” was released in July with second single “Two Ways to Say Goodbye” following. Staying separated didn’t last long. In April of 2009 the band returned to its three original members, leaving them without Johnny Colt and Brandon Bush. It was then they released their first single in over 3 years, “Hey Soul Sister”. Monahan later commented how important the break was for the band.

“I think taking time away from each other really made the heart grow fonder,” Monahan said. “We realized how important we were to one another and taking a few years off helped us all really look at ourselves and what we could contribute to this band as opposed to what we weren’t getting from the band.”

The title of the new album “Save Me San Francisco” was named due to the band’s identity tied so deeply with the city. The group said they wanted to pay homage to the Bay Area metropolis, a place the band holds dear to them. “Save Me San Francisco” is an autobiographical account of Train’s beginnings, and embodies not only the spirit of the album, but also the soul of Train as a band. Band members’ say the song’s lyrics take the listener through the three-piece’s humble start in the mid-90s up through the time when Monahan, in particular, left the City by the Bay. “It’s very related to my existence, but Jimmy, Scott and I have been through a lot together in the last 14-15 years, so it represents a lot to them, too, because they don’t reside in San Francisco anymore, and we all miss it,” Monahan said.

Critics say the album taps into Train’s organic sound, recalling the blues and folk-infused rock that put the band on the map from the start. “It’s pretty basic,” Monahan explains of the record. “But really cool because there’s super catchy riffs and melodies in it, which I think are way more important that any production trick or great-sounding vocal production. It’s kind of us going backward so we can go forward.”

The band is currently touring with Butch Walker and the Black Widows. We haven’t seen the last of Train yet.

Famous Runners Up

In a competition you always strive to be number one, the best, the winner. However, there can only be one winner and this is true in music competitions as well. The winner from a music competition gets a lot of attention that likely result in fame and fortune. Sometimes though the runner up becomes more successful than or just as successful as the winner. We’ve seen this happen over time in music competitions such as Star Search and American Idol. Pop sensations Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears were runners- up on Star Search. Here are the runners-up from a more modern music competition, American Idol.

Starting in order of seasons, the runner up of season one was Justin Guarini. He lost to Kelly Clarkson, who is now one of the world’s recognized recording artists. I would say in this instance, he had some fame but now as much as Kelly. He released two albums after American Idol that were called Justin Guarini and Stranger Things Have Happened.

Season Two, which aired in 2003, had some tough competition. The two finalists were Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. The runner up that year was Clay Aiken. After the show, he had a lot of success in the mainstream pop music industry. Maybe even more than Ruben Studdard did. Clay has won numerous music awards and has released five albums. Ruben has released four albums, and is better known as an R&B singer.

The runner up in season three was Diana DeGarmo. She was beat out by Fantasia Barrino. She released two albums called Blue Skies and Unplugged in Nashville. Soon after American Idol, she decided to sing country music instead of pop music. I would say that Fantasia got more of the spotlight in this scenario. However, Fantasia doesn’t have the fame that Clay Aiken or Kelly Clarkson has.

In season four the top two contestants were Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood. The winner of this was Carrie Underwood which left Bo as the runner up. Both of these contestants were not known for their pop music style. Bo sings southern rock and Carrie sings country music. Bo has only released two albums which are called The Real Thing and See the Light. In this case, the runner up didn’t have as much success as the winner.

Season five was a fun one to watch and had a lot of character. The runner up was Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks was the winner. Katharine released two albums, and has great success as an actress. She has had roles in different movies and television shows such as the House Bunny and CSI: New York.

In 2007, season six aired. The competition was great and the runner up was Blake Lewis. The winner that year was Jordin Sparks. He has released two albums, A.D.D. (Audio Day Dream) and Heartbreak on Vinyl. The second album has some songs that will be release this year as singles and will have to be determined their position on the Billboard music chart.

Season seven had a young runner up, David Archuleta. He was beat out by David Cook. Archuleta got a lot of attention because of his age, looks, and great voice. He can also play musical instruments like the guitar and piano. He has been nominated and won a lot of Teen Choice awards for his music and talent.

Season eight which aired last year had so many great singers. It was narrowed down to Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. Adam Lambert was the runner up, but that hasn’t stopped him from being so successful.
