American Idol Judges

Season nine of American Idol has been going strong since the first weeks of production. The judges have narrowed down the thousands of contestants who auditioned for a spot in Hollywood. The show is now getting to the top twenty five performers. The judges have narrowed down and deliberated about the best of the best to present to the audience these top singers. The audience votes on their favorite singer to try to get them passed to the next round of competition. The judges are harsher in their evaluation and give critique and praise to contestant’s performance of the night. The judges can sway or influence how the audience will vote. Here is a look at who the American Idol judges are this season.

Simon Cowell has been with American Idol since day one. He is one of the most well known judges yet he is liked the least because of his brutal honesty and temperament. However, the man knows what he is doing and is a leader in the entertainment industry. He produces music competition shows in both the U.S. and the U.K. Simon has been in the industry for more than twenty years and has worked as an executive at Sony Records. His ear for talent has made him a pioneer in the pop industry as he has shaped and molded some of the top pop artists of our time.

Kara DioGuardi is highly qualified to a judge on the show. She is a seasoned veteran in the music industry and has her own personal success. She is a songwriter that has produced hits for top recording artists all over the world. She is part owner of Arthouse Entertainment, and it is a very successful lucrative business. She is one of the highest demanded songwriters in the industry. She has written songs that have made an artist’s career skyrocket to stardom, and her songs also appear in movies, television shows, commercials, and all over the world. She has even written award winning songs for Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. You have probably heard Kara’s songs on the Internet radio, a movie, or a traditional radio station being sung by famous singers.

A judge that everyone loves and who has also been there since day one is Randy Jackson. He is also a powerhouse in the music industry. Like Simon, he has also been in the industry for twenty years. He not only produces music, but he plays music as well. He toured with the band Journey and played bass guitar. He has been a vice president and major recording labels and has toured, produced, and worked with some of the best in the industry including Madonna. He helps the contestants of American Idol become stars and his critiques are invaluable. He not only performs in the industry, but he has shaped and produced some of the best performers and has contributed to albums that have sold millions worldwide.

The newest judge who replaced Paula Abdul is Ellen DeGeneres. Unlike the other judges, Ellen isn’t a veteran in the music industry. However, she does know a thing or two about stage presence and performance because she is an actress, comedian, and the host of an award winning talk show. Her critiques and perspective on the show offer some new light and a different perspective to the contestants and audience. She is a star in her own right as she has been a leader in the entertainment industry for acting.

Famous Runners Up

In a competition you always strive to be number one, the best, the winner. However, there can only be one winner and this is true in music competitions as well. The winner from a music competition gets a lot of attention that likely result in fame and fortune. Sometimes though the runner up becomes more successful than or just as successful as the winner. We’ve seen this happen over time in music competitions such as Star Search and American Idol. Pop sensations Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears were runners- up on Star Search. Here are the runners-up from a more modern music competition, American Idol.

Starting in order of seasons, the runner up of season one was Justin Guarini. He lost to Kelly Clarkson, who is now one of the world’s recognized recording artists. I would say in this instance, he had some fame but now as much as Kelly. He released two albums after American Idol that were called Justin Guarini and Stranger Things Have Happened.

Season Two, which aired in 2003, had some tough competition. The two finalists were Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. The runner up that year was Clay Aiken. After the show, he had a lot of success in the mainstream pop music industry. Maybe even more than Ruben Studdard did. Clay has won numerous music awards and has released five albums. Ruben has released four albums, and is better known as an R&B singer.

The runner up in season three was Diana DeGarmo. She was beat out by Fantasia Barrino. She released two albums called Blue Skies and Unplugged in Nashville. Soon after American Idol, she decided to sing country music instead of pop music. I would say that Fantasia got more of the spotlight in this scenario. However, Fantasia doesn’t have the fame that Clay Aiken or Kelly Clarkson has.

In season four the top two contestants were Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood. The winner of this was Carrie Underwood which left Bo as the runner up. Both of these contestants were not known for their pop music style. Bo sings southern rock and Carrie sings country music. Bo has only released two albums which are called The Real Thing and See the Light. In this case, the runner up didn’t have as much success as the winner.

Season five was a fun one to watch and had a lot of character. The runner up was Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks was the winner. Katharine released two albums, and has great success as an actress. She has had roles in different movies and television shows such as the House Bunny and CSI: New York.

In 2007, season six aired. The competition was great and the runner up was Blake Lewis. The winner that year was Jordin Sparks. He has released two albums, A.D.D. (Audio Day Dream) and Heartbreak on Vinyl. The second album has some songs that will be release this year as singles and will have to be determined their position on the Billboard music chart.

Season seven had a young runner up, David Archuleta. He was beat out by David Cook. Archuleta got a lot of attention because of his age, looks, and great voice. He can also play musical instruments like the guitar and piano. He has been nominated and won a lot of Teen Choice awards for his music and talent.

Season eight which aired last year had so many great singers. It was narrowed down to Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. Adam Lambert was the runner up, but that hasn’t stopped him from being so successful.

Idol Winner Kelly Clarkson

American Idol is one of, if not the most, popular shows in America. We are introduced to hundreds of singers who are then narrowed down to the most amazing top two in the competition. There can only be one American Idol winner, and the audience plays the biggest role by choosing who the winner will be. We help to create a singing sensation and we fall in love with the winner before they become a big star. The first American Idol that won the title is Kelly Clarkson. Her career hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped since she was announced the winner.

Out of all the American Idol winners, Kelly has sold the most albums. She has sold at least 23 million albums, and Carrie Underwood is second to her record. She won the Idol title in 2002 and has released four albums since then. Her first album called Thankful went double platinum and her second album called Breakaway went multi platinum. Her fame and success could be attributed to American Idol because millions of viewers were exposed to her talents before she released albums. Her talent and voice is amazing which is why she won and continues to be a success. Her third album My December was such a hit that she won two Grammy Awards. The current album that she has out is called All I Ever Wanted. She records under the labels Sony Music and RCA Records.

Her music is so unique and likeable by a large audience because she incorporates soul, pop, and rock and roll into her sound. She also writes a lot of her music and her down to earth personality is expressed in her writing. Her down to earth and relaxed style could be attributed to the fact that she grew up in a small town outside of Houston, Texas. At her high school, she started to become interested in singing. She was active in the school’s choir and performed in different musicals throughout her four years there. After high school, she chose to focus on her singing and song writing career instead of going to college.

Not only does Kelly sing and write songs, she has also tried her talents with acting. Soon after winning American Idol, she starred in a movie with the runner up Justin Guarini. She was an extra in a few sitcoms including King of the Hill, Reba, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Her comedic performances can be seen in television shows like MadTV and Saturday Night Live. She has performed some of her top singles and Saturday Night Live and has performed in some of their skits as well.

American Idol History

A music show that has taken over every television in America is American Idol. It is a nationwide phenomenon that has everyone glued to their television for an hour a couple nights a week watching performers make their way into the entertainment industry. The auditions for the chance to perform on the American Idol stage are hilarious and memorable. Some people get their 15 minutes of fame for singing horribly or acting strangely on the audition portion of the show. On the other hand, there are very famous and successful artists that were made on the show like the first season winner Kelly Clarkson. Here is a look back at American Idol history.

The first season started eight years ago in 2002, and was created by Simon Fuller. The show was mirrored after the British version called Pop Idol which has the same concept. Simon Fuller created the show to be an interactive, reality, talent show. We are introduced to millions of singers who are narrowed down to the top ten, and then we fall in love and vote for our favorite singer who becomes the American Idol. The show has consistently stayed at a number one slot because millions of Americans participate and watch the show. The first episodes of the program feature the auditions to narrow down the millions of people who believe they are the best. The show travels to different cities around the nation and pick finalists from each to travel to Hollywood. Once there, the hundreds of finalists are narrowed down even further to 25 people and then down to 10.

The initial choice of who is going to be eligible as an American Idol is determined by the judges. It is a panel of people who are well known in the entertainment industry and have produced or recorded their own albums. The most well known yet least liked judge is Simon Cowell. Next to him on the panel are Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. Later on there was a fourth judge added who is still on the show, and her name is Kara DioGuardi. The only judge who has left the show is Paula Abdul, and currently Simon has expressed interest in leaving the show as well. Season 9 features guest judges and will include Ellen DeGeneres on the panel. They give their input on song choice, voice tone, and overall performance. When the performers are narrowed down to the final ten, the audience now decides who stays or leaves by voting. The judges simply give their input to help the audience decide.

Season 9 is currently airing on television now. They are in the process of auditions. Seasons 1 through 8 had amazing singers and winners. American Idol winners you have probably heard on Internet Radio and in your car or television are Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, and Kris Allen. A lot of the finalists also go on to sign record deals and produce their albums as well. The show is fun to get involved with because you are part of the process of making someone a star. You get to know the singers and help them achieve their dreams to become a star, or in this case an American Idol.
