Music Gift Ideas for the Holidays

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or another holiday during the holiday season, a little gift giving will be sure to come. Gift cards are easy, but not very personal and show little thought. You also don’t want to be known as the bad gift giver, nor do you want to receive a gift that is, shall we say, substandard. Some old school music gifts would include: a walkman, a big bulky boom box, a cassette tape player, or a portable CD player. Those were the gifts you should’ve given out back in the 1980s and early 1990s. Here are some up to date music gift ideas to put on your wish list or gifts to give to a friend, family member, or loved one.

A lot of free Internet radio stations/websites have options for you to make your own playlists. This is similar to a music service provider such as iTunes. A great gift idea is to give someone an MP3 player. This device comes in many different sizes, colors, and brands. It is a way to download your music onto one place that can be taken every where for you to listen to. You can upload your song lists from Internet Radio sites or music services providers off of your computer, onto the MP3, and listen to the music from school, the gym, or anywhere else outside of your home. It’s the walkman of the 2000s.

Some of the earpieces that come with the MP3 player can be uncomfortable or have low sound quality. Another great music gift idea would be to find headphones that produced the best quality sound. You can find headphones that are made for runners so that they don’t slip out of your ears while you are working out. Other types of headphones block out annoying outside sounds. You can find some that match the color of the MP3 player too. This would be a great gift to give with the MP3 player or for someone who already had one.

A lot of artists today record their concerts and sell them as DVDs. Concerts can be very expensive or hard to buy tickets if they artist sells out of them right away. If you know someone’s favorite group or solo artists, you can buy them a live recording of their concert. It’s a fun way to listen to music and concerts are amazing to watch or go to because of the lights, dancing, and theatrical type entertainment. During the holidays, a lot of artists come together to put on performances for a specific holiday such as Christmas. Buying one of these DVDs would not only be a great gift but would also fit the holiday theme.

Keeping your music devices protected is important because the devices won’t get scratched or incur other types of damage. You can find cases to protect MP3 players, headphones, and even DVDs and CDs. Cases are made with protective layers and materials. They also come in an assortment of different colors, fabrics, designs, shapes, and sizes. You can find a case that matches the personality of the person you are giving it to which will make it extra special.

I hope some of these music gift ideas will come in handy for you during the holiday season.

Songs with Santa

A holiday icon that we’ve all loved as kids comes but once a year. He brings us presents, eats cookies, drinks milk and hot cocoa, has flying reindeer, a fleet of elves, and a jolly presence that brings a smile to our faces. I’m talking about Santa Claus of course! If you didn’t write him a letter this year asking for your one Christmas wish, you can catch him at your local mall and tell him in person what you so desire. Be sure not to make his naughty list, and he really does check it twice. He’s so famous in fact, that songs have been written and sung about him for years. A legend? I think not! Here are some songs with Santa.

To spread the word about Santa coming on Christmas Eve, you may have heard or even sang this song yourself, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” This song was written and recorded in 1934 and has been a holiday favorite ever since. Eddie Cantor had a radio show and it was the first place listeners heard the song. It was written by the two songwriters, Haven Gillespie and J. Fred Coots and instantly became a hit. Artists from Destiny’s Child, to Miley Cyrus, to the legendary Bing Crosby have performed their rendition of the classic hit.

Another holiday favorite about him is, “Santa Baby.” It was written in 1953 by Joan Javitz and was originally performed by Eartha Kitt. Perhaps one of the more memorable acts who have sung this was Marilyn Monroe. The song is about a woman who wants extravagant and expensive gifts like jewelry and a yacht (among other things) and sings them like this, “Santa baby, I want a yacht and really thats not a lot. Been an angel all year. Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight”(“Santa Baby”, Javitz 1953). This song to Santa is probably every woman’s favorite.

A song that has been the inspiration for Christmas movies is, “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.” This was written by Tommie Connor and recorded first by Jimmy Boyd. The song was popular that it made the #1 spot on the Billboard Music charts. The lavish store Neiman Marcus loved the song so much that they used it as an idea for Christmas cards sold in their store. The song is about a child who saw their mommy kissing Santa, who was really their dad dressed up in a Santa costume. The movie is a great family film to watch during the holidays, and you’ll get to hear the fun song too.

Do you have any songs about Santa you enjoy listening to over the holidays? What is your favorite present from Santa you have received as a kid (or even as an adult)?

Thanksgiving Dinner Music Playlist

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It is a time to come together with friends, family, and our loved ones to give thanks. It is also a time to watch football for as long as we can without feeling guilty, eating until we are about to explode, sitting at a formal dinner table, and listening to smooth music playing in the background. The perfect Thanksgiving dinner party should have background music amidst the conversation. The music shouldn’t be too distracting or loud, but a nice compliment to a great tasting home cooked meal.

You should choose your playlist in advance so that you can spend as much time as you can with your friends and family and less time picking out CDs or radio stations. I would suggest listening to smooth jazz, holiday, or classical music during dinner. It will set a nice tone that will go along with most Thanksgiving dinners that are usually more formal than regular family dinners. If you don’t already have a nice selection of these types of music, you can find free Internet radio stations that have these channels. You could also select the music you want in advance and create a playlist for an MP3 player or your computer. Here are some music ideas for your dinner.

There are many great classical songs that you can choose from. This type of music has many different types of sounds and is usually instrumental. There are many famous composers that you could play during your dinner party such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. If you want something more contemporary, you could play music by David Lang, Julia Wolfe, or Richard Adams.

Smooth jazz has a unique sound that is more modern sounding and includes electric guitar, saxophones, drums, and synthesizers. It is a subgenre of jazz that is more mainstream and different instrumental styling that classical jazz. You can find great music by Natalie Cole, Luther Vandross, Peter White, or David Lanz to include on your playlist.

For families that celebrate Christmas, a common tradition is to start putting up decorations after Thanksgiving dinner. It can be fun to listen to holiday music to start the season off right after Thanksgiving. There is so much holiday music to choose from including classics and modern remakes from our favorite pop or country artists today. If you wanted to continue with the classical or smooth jazz theme, you can find holiday music recorded in those genres as well. Kenny G has some wonderful holiday music that will keep the music theme for your dinner.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Young and Successful Star

The careers of many musicians start when they are young kids or teenagers including stars such as Michael Jackson. There are so many sensations that have amazing vocal talent that are under the age of 21, and we are always shocked when we hear their actual age. A young and very successful star you hear in all media forums from the Internet to television to radio is Miley Cyrus. She is only 16 years old and has sold more number one hits than some artists in their 20s or 30s. To some, she is the youngest most successful recording artist of our time. Here is a look back at some of her hit albums, songs, and other accomplishments so far during her career.

Miley’s songs are played on both radio on line and traditional radio. She has a unique sound that mixes together country, rock, and pop genres. Her country sound is deeply rooted in her because she was born and raised by country star Billy Ray Cyrus in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to recording number one hits under Hollywood Records label, she also acts, writes songs, and is an author. She was the star of a Disney television show and movie Hannah Montana. She starred in another movie called Bolt in 2008 and contributed some of her songs for the soundtrack. That year she made more than $20 million and was named one of the most influential and successful people in the world.

Her musical career is so unique because she started out with another persona. She was known as Hannah Montana, and recorded albums under that name based on her television show. As Miley grew up, she switched over to perform under her own identity, Miley Cyrus. Her songs were more mature and catered towards an older audience. A lot of her Hannah Montana fans grew up with her and have been loyal fans to Miley. Currently, she has recorded three albums as Miley Cyrus which are: Meet Miley Cyrus, Breakout, and The Time of Our Lives. One of her hit songs that you have probably heard on the radio is Party in the USA. It’s a fun song with great lyrics and an upbeat tempo.

A lot of child stars aren’t successful as adults and see the stardom life start to fade away. Miley has proven to remain a star from childhood into her teenage years, and looks to have a promising career as an adult. Her spunk, creativity, beauty, and intelligence make her the successful star that she is.

One Hit Wonders: Where’d they go?

A one hit wonder is a music artist that has only produced one hit that was a success. They blow up the charts, have millions of fans, then either drop off the charts or seem to go into hiding. A lot of one hit wonders are successful because they jump on the fad train and ride the success of a popular thought, idea, or trend. Other times, a one hit wonder becomes that because a band’s fame, fortune, and success can cause the breakup of the band. People can sometimes get big headed and money can cause fights over power or jealousy.

One hit wonders can still be heard on both traditional and Internet radio even after the fame and hype has settled down. The songs that made the hit lists are still around but sometimes the artists are never heard from. The success of the song can live on while the success of the artist who produced it doesn’t match up. Here are some one hit wonders that you will be sure to recognize. The list is compiled from a VH1 episode they aired where they had a countdown of 100 great and memorable one hit wonders. Their full list and clips from the episode can be found on their website www.vh1.com.

In 1996, an unforgettable dance move was originated with the catchy tunes of Macarena. It is by the band Los del Rio. The song was often played at clubs and frequently makes the dance list for middle school or high school dances. All ages know the legendary dance moves that accompany the song.

If you flashback to 1982, there were two bands that released hits and then became one hit wonders. Tainted Love by Soft Cell and Come on Mickey by Toni Basil made the VH1 list. Marilyn Manson did a remake of Tainted Love in 2004; however he isn’t a one hit wonder. The song was remade for the film Not Another Teen Movie.

A song that you probably sing in front of the mirror or when you are planning the perfect outfit is I’m Too Sexy by one hit wonder Right Said Fred. The song was released in 1992 and is still popular today. We all love to sing it and dance in front of the mirror until we start to believe that we’re too sexy for our shirts.

In 2000, the Baha Men released a catchy tune called Who Let the Dogs Out. We haven’t heard much from the group itself but continue to hear the song. It seems to be a popular anthem for pet lovers and commercials for dog food or toys.

Who could forget the fashion and hair styles from Vanilla Ice. The one hit wonder released an awesome song called Ice Ice Baby. The song was released in 1990. Vanilla Ice pops up here and there in reality TV and other TV spotlights.

Music and the Effects on your Mood

Upbeats, rhythms, melodies, tones, and beats all make up a musical composition. Is the song you are listening to slow, fast, a ballad, a rock song, sad, happy, romantic? Music is a form of expression, and artists often times express their feelings through song. They write songs when they are happy, sad, angry, and even when they are in love. Listening to the different types of songs can affect your mood.

If you are sad, you should listen to happy upbeat music to turn your mood around. If you are angry and need an outlet to release your feelings, you can listen to rock music with fast tempos and loud guitar playing. You can set the mood for a romantic evening with the one you love by playing soft ballads or love songs. Music can be a distraction to take your mind off of pressing issues or simply to entertain.

Music in its most simple form is to entertain. It is played for fun at parties, school dances, sporting events, at home, or while driving in your car. People listen to music in their cars while commuting to work to pass their time more enjoyably. It would be so boring to sit in a car for thirty minutes in complete silence. With the radio on, you can jam out to your favorite tunes or engage in a talk show. People listen to music while they need to pass time while at work or cleaning their house for example. It is a way to entertain them.

Music can set the tone for your day or night. When you wake up in the morning, listen to something upbeat to get your day going. It can put you in a better mood by listening to fun, happy music. Because music affects your mood, if you were to listen to slow songs in the mornings you might find it harder to wake up or be motivated to start the day. At night, when you are winding down or have had a stressful day at work or school, listen to music that will calm you. Slower beats, acoustic, or classical music can be very calming.

While planning a romantic dinner or evening at home with your loved one, you should play love songs or ballads. You can find an Internet Radio station that will have fewer commercials than on a traditional radio that won’t interrupt the flow of music or the mood you are trying to create. Listening to love music can spark emotions and have the ability to make you feel more connected to someone. Listening to love songs is a shared experience, and when you hear a particular love song you will think of the person you were with.

Listening to different types of music can affect your mood. If you listen to upbeat music you could feel happier and more energetic. While on the other hand, listening to slow music can make you feel sad or relaxed. Choose the right music that will affect the mood you want to be in.
