Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a funk rock band based in Hollywood, California and were formed in 1983, in Los Angeles, California. The band currently consists of founding members Anthony Kiedis (vocals) and Michael “Flea” Balzary (bass) along with a longtime member Chad Smith (drums). Guitarist John Frusciante quietly left the band on good terms in late 2008. On January 2, 2010, Josh Klinghoffer was announced as Frusciante’s replacement.

The band initially formed for a one-off support act for a friend’s band, calling themselves Tony Flow And The Miraculously Majestic Masters Of Mayhem. Upon renaming themselves Red Hot Chili Peppers, they played a handful of small club venues in Los Angeles in 1983, before they were signed to EMI Records.

In addition to Kiedis and Flea, the group originally featured guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons. Slovak, however, died of a heroin overdose in 1988, resulting in Irons departure.
Flea has had an acting career. His resume includes: The Big Lebowski (as Nihilist), Back to the Future, Part II and Part III (as Douglas J. Needles), My Own Private Idaho (as Budd), Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (as The Ruined Man). He is also the voice of Donnie on movie and TV series The Wild Thornberrys.
The group's first name, with their original lineup, was Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem.
In 2001, Flea founded the nonprofit Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, which offers music lessons and instruments to children in need.
The band has won seven Grammy Awards. They sold over fifty million albums worldwide, had seven singles in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 (including three singles in the Top 10), had five #1 singles on the Mainstream Rock charts, and a record eleven #1 singles on the Modern Rock charts.
Irons and Slovak formed a group called What Is This? as a side project in the early 1980s, which contractually prevented them from recording with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but they quickly returned to the lineup to tour.
