Savage Garden

From Woodridge, Australia to worldwide success, Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones were responsible for some of the most widely-known pop songs of the late ’90s and early ’00s. Appropriately enough, given their Anne Rice-inspired name, Savage Garden veered between lush ballads (Truly Madly Deeply, I Knew I Loved You) and up-tempo dance numbers (I Want You, The Animal Song) with a deftness that put many of their contemporaries in the shade.

In July of 1996, under Roadshow Music, the duo released their debut single I Want You. The single was a hit in Australia and became the year’s highest-selling by an Australian artist. The success of the single garnered much interest from many U.S. record labels and in September, Columbia Records won the bidding war to sign the band. In November a second single, To the Moon and Back, was released and was another chart hit—reaching No. 1 in January of the following year.

Savage Garden was an Australian pop duo consisting of Darren Hayes as vocalist and Daniel Jones as instrumentalist. Formed in Logan City, Queensland in 1994, the duo achieved international success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the number-one hit singles "I Want You", "To the Moon and Back", "Truly Madly Deeply", "The Animal Song" and "I Knew I Loved You". Their two studio albums, Savage Garden and Affirmation reached number one in Australia and peaked in the top ten in both the United Kingdom and United States.

The group won a record number of ten ARIA Music Awards in 1997 for their debut album and its related singles. They disbanded in 2001 and Hayes continued as a solo artist.

In January 1998, "All Around Me", a sixth single, was released just as the band kicked off their worldwide tour in Cairns ,Australia. By the end of the year,"Truly Maddly Deeply" was the most-played song on US radio and the only one-side single to spend a full year in the Top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100.
In October 2001,Savage Garden officially announced their break-up and the duo went there separate ways.Darren Hayes began work on his first solo album. The first single"Insatiable",was released in 2002 and the album,Spin was released the same year.
A teenage Kirsten Dunst appeared in the music video for "I Knew I Loved You"(1999) as the object of Darren Hayes's affection.
The Savage Garden fanclub-was run by Daniel Jones, family members and friends. Membership(which was a yearly subscription to the Savage Garden fanzine)and merchandise were available from the fanclub website, and it was possible for non-members to buy certain items without the membership discount.
In June 1994,Darren and Daniel left Red Edge to pursue a career together. The new duo was named"Savage Garden"-a name taken from"The vampire Chronicles" by Ann Rice(Then mind of each man is a savage garden...)of which Darren was a fan.
In January 1998, "Truly Madly Deeply" hit number one in the U.S, pushing record sales to over 11 million worldwide.
