Two artists have recorded as Selena: one Mexican-American, the other Dutch.

1. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 Lake Jackson, Texas – March 31, 1995 Corpus Christi, Texas) best known as Selena, was a Mexican American singer who has been called “The Queen of Tejano music”. The youngest child of a Mexican-American couple, Selena released her first album at the age of twelve. She won Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1987 Tejano Music Awards and landed a recording contract with EMI a few years later. Her fame grew throughout the early 1990s, especially in Spanish-speaking countries.

Selena attained further notability in North America after she was murdered at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. On April 16, 1995, two weeks after her death, George W. Bush, governor of Texas at the time, declared her birthday “Selena Day” in Texas. Warner Bros. produced Selena, a film based on her life starring Jennifer Lopez in 1997. Selena’s life was also the basis of the musical Selena Forever starring Veronica Vazquez as Selena. As of June 2006, Selena was commemorated with a museum and a bronze life-sized statue (Mirador de la Flor in Corpus Christi, Texas), which are visited by hundreds of fans each week.
Selena was born in Lake Jackson, Texas, to a Mexican father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and a Mexican-American mother, Marcella Ofelia Samora,and was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness. She began singing at the age of six; when she was nine her father founded the singing group Selena y Los Dinos, which she fronted. They initially performed at the Quintanilla family’s restaurant, PappaGayo’s, but the restaurant failed shortly afterwards.

 

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American singer and songwriter. She was named the "top Latin artist of the '90s" and "Best selling Latin artist of the decade" by Billboard for her fourteen top-ten singles in the Top Latin Songs chart, including seven number-one hits. Selena had the most successful Latin singles of 1994 and 1995, "Amor Prohibido" and "No Me Queda Más". She was called "The Queen of Tejano music" and the Mexican equivalent of Madonna. Selena's first album, Selena y Los Dinos, was released when she was twelve years old. A few years after winning Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1987 Tejano Music Awards, she was signed to a recording contract with EMI. Her career and popularity grew throughout the early 1990s in the United States and Spanish-speaking countries. Her album, Selena Live! won Best Mexican-American Album at the 36th Grammy Awards in 1994.

Selena was murdered at the age of 23 on March 31, 1995 by Yolanda Saldívar, a staffer and president of Selena's fan club. On April 12, 1995, two weeks after her death, Texas governor George W. Bush declared her birthday "Selena Day" in that state. In 1997, a Warner Bros. film based on her life titled Selena was released, starring Jennifer Lopez in the title role. As of 2012, Selena has sold over 60 million albums worldwide.

She is buried at the Seaside Memorial Park next to a Mesquite tree.

Her funeral took place on April 3, 1995 at the Memorial Coliseum, a day after it would have been her third anniversary of her marriage to Chris.

She Took college correspondance courses at Pacific Western University in California.

She likes white roses.

She was known as the 'Queen of Tejano Music.'
