Blues Traveler is a rock band, formed in Princeton, New Jersey in 1987. The band's music covers a variety of genres, including blues rock, psychedelic rock, folk rock, soul, and Southern rock. They are known for extensive use of segues in their live performances, and were considered a key part of the re-emerging jam band scene of the 1990s, spearheading the H.O.R.D.E. touring music festival.
Currently, the group comprises singer and harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, drummer Brendan Hill, bassist Tad Kinchla and keyboardist Ben Wilson. Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson joined the band following the death of original bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999.
While Blues Traveler is best known among fans for their improvisational live shows, the general public is most familiar with the group from their Top 40 singles "Run-Around" and "Hook". They gained mainstream popularity after their fourth studio album four, released in 1994. Sheehan's death and Popper's struggle with obesity put a damper on the group's success, and A&M dropped the band in 2002. However, the band took this transition period as an opportunity to start in new directions musically, going largely independent and releasing on smaller experimental labels.
In March 2012, Blues Traveler released a double-disc compilation entitled 25 on Hip-O Records; the album commemorates the band's silver anniversary and includes their hit singles, new covers, and previously unreleased b-side material. Blues Traveler's most recent studio album Suzie Cracks the Whip, was released in 2012.
Popper wanted to be a comedian. He was a big fan of John Belushi, and took up harmonica after watching him do it in The Blues Brothers.
Sheehan died of a drug overdose.
They are good friends with Paul Schaeffer and have made more appearances on Late Night With David Letterman than any other band.
Until 1995, they got very little airplay. Their first albums sold fairly well because they toured constantly and developed a fan base, especially at colleges.
In 1993, Popper was severely injured in a motorcycle accident.
Popper once weighed 400 pounds. He had his stomach stapled in 2001 and is now about 220.
Blues Traveler started the annual H.O.R.D.E. tour (Horizons Of Rock Developing Everywhere) in 1995.
The band's name comes from the movie Ghostbusters - referring to the ghost "Gozer The Traveler" faced by the Ghostbusters at the end of the movie.
The song's title refers to a hook in music terminology: the catchy element or phrase of a song which makes it distinctive and memorable. The song's lyrics assert that whatever the singer sings about is effectively meaningless, since the song's musical hook will keep listeners coming back, even if they are unaware of the reason. In the introduction, John Popper sings, "It doesn't matter what I say / So long as I sing withinflection / That makes you feel that I'll convey / Some inner truth of vast reflection."
It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel that I'll convey
Some inner truth of vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks
1-Because the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely
There is something amiss, I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow
(rpt 1...Was the)
Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in
If you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win
And then begin to see
What you're doing to me this MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me
So desperately I sing to thee of love
Sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feelings on the shelf
I've tried well no in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got
Too much pride inside to hide or slide
I'll do as I'll decide and let it ride until I've died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes of hip three minute ditties
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all of your cities
To the ground I've found
I will not mess around
Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
That's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
I don't rely luck because...
Oh, once upon a midnight dearie
I woke with something in my head
I couldn't escape the memory
of a phone call and of what you said
Like a game show contestant with a parting gift,
I could not believe my eyes
When I saw through the voice of a trusted friend
Who needs to humor me and tell me lies
Yeah, humor me and tell me lies
and I'll lie, too, and say I don't mind
And as we seek, so shall we find
And when you're feeling open, I'll still be here
But not without a certain degree of fear
Of what will be with you and me
I still can see things hopefully, but you
1-Why you wanna give me a run-around?
Is it a surefire way to speed things up
When all it does is slow me down?
Shake me and my confidence, about a great many things
But I've been there, I can see it cower
Like a nervous magician waiting in the wings
Of a bad play where the heroes are right
And nobody thinks or expects too much
And Hollywood's calling for the movie rights
Singin', hey, babe, let's keep in touch
Hey, baby, let's keep in touch
But I want more than a touch, I want you to reach me
And show me all the things no one else can see
So what ya feel becomes mine as well
And soon if we're lucky, we'd be unable to tell
What's yours and mine, the fishing's fine
And it doesn't have to rhyme
so don't you feed me a line
But you. (repeat 1)
Tra la-la bomba dear, this is the pilot speakin'
And I've got some news for you
It seems my ship still stands no matter what you drop
And there ain't a whole lot that you can do
Oh, sure, the banner may be torn
and the wind's gotten colder
Perhaps I've grown a little cynical
But I know no matter what the waitress brings
I shall drink in and always be full
Yeah, I will drink it and always be full
Oh, I like coffee, and I like tea
But to be able to enter a final plea
I still got this dream that you just can't shake
I love you to the point you can no longer take
Well, all right, o,k., so be that way
I hope and pray that there's something left to say
but you (repeat 1)
