Perth, Australia (1977 – 2012)

INXS (pronounced “In Excess”) was a rock group formed in Perth, Australia. The band formed in 1977 under the name The Farris Brothers. Original members included Michael Hutchence (lead vocals), Andrew Farriss (guitar and keyboards), Tim Farriss (lead guitar), Jon Farriss (drums), Garry Beers (bass), and Kirk Pengilly (saxophone and guitar). The band changed their name to INXS just prior to the release of their self-titled début album in 1980.

The band’s second album, Underneath The Colours released in Australia in 1981, included the minor hit with “Stay Young.” The success of this album helped the band gain momentum and notoriety for the world-wide release of their third album, Shabooh Shoobah in 1982. The single “The One Thing” from this album brought them their first Top-30 hit in America. Touring in 1983 in support of fellow Aussies Men at Work helped bring them to American attention.

The Swing (album #4) was released in 1984 and “Original Sin” became their first #1 single and an international hit. It was followed by Listen Like Thieves in 1986; an album which brought the band’s singer Michael Hutchence into the spotlight as a sex symbol for the MTV generation. The single, “What You Need”, became a Top-Five Billboard hit and the band enjoyed ever increasing U.S. success.

In the 1990s, INXS brought a new audience following Hutchence's romance with pop singer, Kylie Minogue, and achieved greater acclaim in the UK. However, starting with Welcome to Wherever You Are, in 1992, they achieved less success in the United States. Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel suite in Sydney in November 1997 and INXS did not perform publicly for a year. They made appearances with several guest singers including Jimmy Barnes, Terence Trent D'Arby, and Jon Stevens; Stevens formally joined the band for a tour and recording session in 2002. In 2005, members of INXS participated in Rock Star: INXS, a reality television series, broadcast worldwide, culminating in the selection of their new lead singer, Canadian J.D. Fortune, and the release of "Pretty Vegas" and "Afterglow" as singles, and its album Switch.

In late 2010, they recorded and released Original Sin, a tribute album, featuring guest artists such as Kavyen Temperley (of Eskimo Joe) and Ben Harper. In September 2011 the band announced that Northern Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin had replaced Fortune as their lead vocalist ahead of a planned tour of South America, Australia & Europe later in the year.

INXS won six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards including three for 'Best Group' in 1987, 1989 and 1992, and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001.As of May 2013 INXS have sold close to 40 million records worldwide.

On 11 November 2012, during their performance as support act to Matchbox Twenty at Perth Arena, Australia, INXS announced that the performance would be their last, though they did not officially announce a permanent band retirement.

In 2014, INXS released a tell-all history of the band on an Australian television interview special THE STORY BEHIND INXS. Drummer Jon Farriss made the statement: "Never say never", regarding the possibility that the band could record and perform more music in the future, during the interview.

The Australian pub rock group INXS first got together in 1977 as The Farriss Brothers. They changed their name to INXS in 1980 and signed a record deal in Australia. In 1983, they got an American record contract. The group became internationally famous by the start of the '90s.
Hutchence gained a reputation as a ladies man with a flamboyant, arrogant wild streak. He dated Kylie Minogue, Michelle Bennett and Paula Yates.
Hutchence died on November 22, 1997. It was ruled a suicide, but there was evidence that he was practicing autoerotic asphyxiation, which involves cutting off oxygen for sexual pleasure.
After losing Hutchence, INXS continued with various guest singers through the end of the 1990s, and in 2005, they found their new lead singer through their reality show Rock Star: INXS, which promised the gig to the winner. J.D. Fortune got the prize and became their permanent singer.
